First 24โ48 hours
- Rest after arrival and keep activity light.
- Drink water regularly, eat normally and sleep well.
- Avoid alcohol, smoking and strenuous exercise.
- Do not travel to a higher altitude if you feel unwell.
Common AMS symptoms
Headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness, poor appetite and disturbed sleep can be signs of acute mountain sickness.
What to do
- Stop ascending and rest at the same altitude.
- Tell your companion, guide or hotel staff about your symptoms.
- Seek medical advice if symptoms do not improve or become worse.
- Descend to a lower altitude when symptoms are worsening.
Get urgent medical help immediately for breathlessness at rest, confusion, severe weakness, inability to walk straight, blue lips, chest congestion or a persistent wet cough. These may indicate HAPE or HACE and can be life-threatening.
Important reminder
Altitude illness can affect anyone, regardless of age, fitness or previous experience. Never ignore worsening symptoms and never leave a sick traveler alone.
